- Field/Research Assistant · Montana State University Barley Lab07-01-2020 – 05-01-2021
As a genetics research/field assistant, I participated in several major studies that are changing the Montana agriculture economy. We are continuing to build new strands of barley that are better adapted to the ever-changing Montana ecosystem. I built a project that tested for proline content in different strands of barely. High proline content is usually a negative sign for growers, especially in barley for beer, as it creates unwanted “off-tastes.” Using a spectrophotometer, I took measurements of proline content in our lines of barley. With this information, we compared whether "irrigated" or "dry" lines affect proline content, how proline content differs in the different life stages of the barley, and if proline content changes from year-to-year. - Worked on project to create acid soil-resistant barley strands/method for testing for these strands. - Ran protein gels and scanned gels for analysis. Will be published in future paper - Helped measure water retention in different barley strands - Measured and managed hundreds of different growing barley test strands - Collected and froze barley heads in liquid nitrogen for analysis
