- Senior Design Manager · Elekta01-01-2021
I joined Elekta in January of 2021 at the very start of their digital transformation process. My role was to lead and develop a new UX team of eight members - across four continents and five timezones - and to develop the UX/Design processes, whilst also developing the new user interface for an entirely new line of product… Elekta has progressed from a fragmented and incommunicative set of designers, developers and products, to releasing its first, full suite of integrated system applications - which has both increased the efficacy of cancer care worldwide, but also allows the business to pivot into a providing a full-scale, software application business model for its many hospitals and treatment centres around the world. During my time at Elekta, my team can proudly say that we: • Developed an entirely new design system from scratch and deployed it into development as the UX/UI framework for one of the most revolutionary products the company has ever launched. • Organised and adopted an entirely new way of working for the design discipline within the company; allowing a culture of innovation and creation to drive our product output forward. • Have been responsible for dramatically improving the potential for increased cancer treatment output across those patients using the MR-Linac machines.
- Product Design Manager · BT PLC05-01-2019 – 01-01-2021
As part of a huge, department-wide restructure, I was appointed to Product Design Manager for the entire ‘Care & Content’ (essentially Help and Publishing) alliance for BT across their digital channels. I am responsible for over twenty UI/UX designers, working within squads and across two, distinct alliances. Alongside the day-to-day management and mentoring responsibilities that come from looking after the people within my teams, I am directly responsible for the Product Design output across the Customer Care and Care Agent tribes. This means that the customer satisfaction and service related metrics provided by the products developed within these alliances are vital to both the success of the product but also the business. As Product Design Manager my role has been to support my team of digital designers (UI/UX) in their transition to Product Designers whilst also implementing a more structured, Agile approach to our day-to-day ways or working. This work involves interacting heavily with both immediate alliance stakeholders and the senior management team as we navigate the challenges that such a large restructure can bring.
- Senior UX Designer · BT PLC01-01-2018 – 04-01-2019
Homepage: After turning permanent at BT, the first major project involved investigating, planning and working on the UX in a redesign of the main BT.com website homepage. With the website requiring a move from a ‘portal’ style site into a more brand-aligned, product led experience, the identification of traffic flow (analytics), and management of stakeholder requirements was key. Content ‘Portal’: Following on from this page redesign, the next stage was to re-evaluate the publishable content areas of the BT.com real-estate (Sport, TV and Lifestyle news) and to work on the design architecture and user experience for the migration from an older publishing system into Adobe Experience Manager. Alongside this technology migration, off-the-shelf personalisation technologies become widely available for use within both sales and consumer environments, so the investigation, planning and implementation of their usage alongside already live and internally developed systems became a core output of the project. Sales Personalisation: My work-stream saw me overviewing the UX work within the sales personalisation stream at BT. With multiple streams of work being conducted concurrently, this involved heavy periods of investigation across many teams (Optimisation, Transformation et al).
- Senior UX Designer (contract) · BT PLC06-01-2017 – 01-01-2018
Initially brought into BT for a three month contract working on several quick-turnaround projects, my time as a contractor was extended several times before turning permanent in January of 2018.
- Senior Web Producer · Bauer Publishing (Motorcycle News, MCN)12-01-2012 – 10-01-2015
MCN is the world’s oldest and - arguably - largest motorcycling publication in the world, with around 2 million unique visitors a month visiting the website alone. By late 2012 when I joined, traffic had started to wain and little content output was being produced with regards to social media. Within eight months, myself and my small team had managed to increase the vital webpage metrics of pages per user, dwell time and decreased the bounce rate. We had also taken Facebook from just under 60k ‘likes’ to well over 120k. Two and a half years later, we had a brand new website, delivering higher-than-ever audience figures and were on the cusp of 500k likes on Facebook, 100k subscribers on YouTube and over 100k Twitter followers across all accounts.
- Head of Online · Zappar05-01-2012 – 12-01-2012
This was a new role within a small, Augmented Reality startup with the responsibility of creating revenue streams and maintaining product support for the Android/iOS application. It was an exciting and extremely challenging role that carried with it many of the expected pitfalls and issues that working for a self-funded startup can bring.
- User Experience (UX) Designer / Web Manager · Future PLC05-01-2011 – 04-01-2012
As the solitary UX designer for Future there was much work to do. With the traditional print publications beginning a steady decline in sales and revenue there was an invigorated focus on online delivery; through both revenue generation and supporting the print business. This was very much an all hands on deck role and was extremely varied and exciting. TotalFilm.com There was no dedicated management resource on TotalFilm.com and as such it was suffering from low traffic figures and dwindling revenues. Working closely with the editorial team and group publisher on the day-to-day production and development duties, we embarked on a concerted program of development and refinement. The fruits of this work paid off and soon TotalFilm.com was returning a huge increase of page impressions a month whilst steadily growing its user/audience numbers and revenue. Global, company-wide initiatives, Blog format template (UK.Gizmodo.com), Facebook/Social development. Core day-to-day development consisted of strategy and interface work on many network-wide initiatives; such as the integration of a Global Video service, implementation of usability and A/B multivariate testing and the development of a more coherent, holistic approach to social media. With the acquisition of the UK version of Gizmodo.com there was also the requirement for a more personal, immediate display of editorial content. This was developed and then rolled out as a company wide ‘template’ for use in similar products moving forward. Newsstand Application Interface - iOS Magazine, Mobile website structure. Working closely with both the application development team and the subscription/sales departments, we developed a series of application enhancements that improved both the readability of the digital versions but also the sell-through of subscriptions and additional issue purchases. The same team were also responsible for the development of a global set of mobile templates that enabled each web property to publish their existing content online using the same templates and to develop additional, mobile revenue streams.

It was a user-generated, tee-shirt design website where illustrations and designs are made available by the public for the public to vote upon and purchase. Revenue is earned by the designer on each product sold. It was successful enough to acquire some seed capital in the beginning of 2008 to allow its development and growth into an entirely redeveloped offering - MySoti.com; adding poster and canvas artwork as well as custom Interior design products such as one-off printed wallpaper and lampshades to the product mix.
- Manager, European Internet Portal · Sony PlayStation [SCEE]04-01-2007 – 04-01-2008
Higher-level strategy, proposition, analyst and design work were the key-components of the Portal Management role and with the arrival of the PLAYSTATION3, a more cohesive online experience that aligned all aspects of Sony’s business areas was required. The Portal team was responsible for the day-to-day operation and running of the eu.playstation.com property, as well as Information Architecture, Editorial policy/direction and Design of the site as a whole. A challenging role which involved the management and production of 36 country-based websites in over 22 languages. Interface challenges were plenty - we had to design and develop our content and applications for use across the entire PlayStation console range (and their various input methods; game controllers, motion/gesture interfaces et al) as well as for access via traditional web and mobile devices.
